How We Started
A quick timeline
- Jeff Marr founded the business in 1998, initially registering a portfolio of 300 domains including lawyers.com.au, expertwitnesses.com.au and onlineloans.com.au. At the time you needed a business name for every domain, so it was an expensive process!
- In 2002, he acquired a lot of key domain names in the auDA generic auction including names like cruises.com.au, televisions.com.au and wedding.com.au
- In 2005, Jeff brought on some private investors, and continued the successful growth of the portfolio when securing names like Perth.com.au, Darwin.com.au, Newcastle.com.au and AirlieBeach.com.au in auDA’s initial Geographic domain name Ballot.
- Later in 2005, we started picking up “drops” – ie: names that other people had decided not to renew or re-register. Some of the names acquired in that process include fitness.com.au, stockmarket.com.au, video.com.au, map.com.au and basketball.com.au
- From 2006-2008 we pursued a consolidation strategy which provided us with the largest and highest quality domain portfolio in Australia, and arguably, is also the best domain portfolio in terms of size and quality, in any major domain extension anywhere in the world!
- In 2008, Right Click Capital, led by Ari Klinger, and Siimon Reynolds joined the company, helping to raise funding, complete additional acquisitions, further develop the company’s strategy and take the concept to market.
- October 2008: Fairfax Digital invests in OMG and becomes a strategic partner. Fairfax will leverage their extensive content library, technology platform and online advertising expertise to help OMG build out their portfolio of websites.
